About this work
A child in a long green cloak stands in a wooded clearing, cradling a small white lamb close to their chest. A luminous pale sun or moon glows low on the horizon directly behind the child's head. On either side, half-hidden among dark trees, two packs of wolves crouch and snarl, teeth bared, watching the pair from the shadows.
Warm greens and browns fill the clearing while the wolves are painted in near-black shadow, their eyes and teeth picked out with small pale highlights. The glowing disc behind the child reads almost like a halo, and the symmetrical framing of the menacing wolves against the calm, protected pair gives the scene a tense, dramatic charge.
